Inspections can be performed out in the field on an iPad using the HDS Inspections app, or entered into Doorways using the desktop version. If an inspection has already been started and may be in progress in the field, resuming it from the desktop will override any changes made from the field that have not been synced (due to lack of internet connectivity). You could lose inspection results if an inspector in the field is working on an inspection, therefore it is not recommended to work on an inspection from that desktop that has already been started on the iPad.

Inspection Overview 

  1. Select the Inspection you wish to start from the Inspections List. This will open up a view of the overall inspection details:


A. Back To Inspections Overview - This link will return you the the overall list of inspections.

B. Tenant/Unit Details - Includes information pertaining to the unit and tenant the inspection has been set for, such as address, tenant name, unit details, permission to enter, landlord, and phone number.

C. Delete - Clicking the trash icon will prompt the users confirmation, "Are You Sure?", and clicking "Yes" will remove the inspection.

D. Inspection Sections - 

E. Inspection Details - This section holds information as to the tenant and unit this inspection will apply to. Clicking any of the links will take the user to the unit/tenant page.

F. Edit Inspection Details - Clicking this icon will open up the edit view of the inspection details, allowing a user to edit almost any field in that section. Click "Save" and the details will be changed.

F. Inspection Status and Results: This information includes a status and a result for an inspection. When an inspection has yet to be performed, the status will be set to "Scheduled" and the Result will be set to "No results yet".

Start Inspection Button

  1. When this button says "Start Inspection" you will be navigated to the Inspection Categories list, and can begin to perform the inspection. 

  2. When the inspection has already ben started, either in the field or on the desktop, the button text states "Resume Inspection" the user will be prompted to confirm resuming when an inspection done in the field may have not had the opportunity to connect with the desktop app via connectivity issue. This could wipe any changes made out in the field. If confirmed, user will be navigated to the Inspection Category List. 

3. If the inspection has been completed , either failed or passed, the button will be replaced with a "View Results" button. Clicking view results will take you to a list of the inspections categories, similar to the Perform Inspection categories, however non-editable.

H. Miscellaneous Inspection Actions: This section offers the ability to print a blank inspection form before completion, as well as a variety of actions that can be performed after and inspection has been finished.

  • Print Blank Form: This button opens a .pdf depicting a blank version of the inspection. This can be used in-field for organizations that do not use the iPad app, or those having technical failures.
  • Print Completed Inspection: This button is only available after an inspection has been completed. Clicking Print Completed Inspection will open a .pdf of the completed inspection. 
  • Schedule Re-Inspection: This option is only available after an inspection has been completed and failedClicking this button will open the New Inspection Wizard for ease in creating an re-inspection.

  • Generate Work Order: After a work order has been completed, it could potentially be necessary to create work order for the specified unit. Clicking this button will run the New Work Order wizard.

I. Custom Attributes - 

J. Comments - Comments left by users can be seen in this section of the inspection detail page, listed in order by the date they were added.

  1. Add New Comment: Click the "+" symbol to add a comment to the inspection. This button will prompt users to enter any text pertaining to the inspection.


Step-by-Step Guide to Performing an Inspection (Desktop/Computer):


1. Click the Start Inspection button.

2. This will open the Inspections Categories page:

a. Add Category Button: This feature allows you to add multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, etc as it applies to the unit being inspected. For more information on how to add a category, see Adding a Category During Inspection.

b. Categories: This is where the list of categories will appear. Each category will include some detail as to whether the category has passed or failed inspection parameters, the status of the category (Incomplete, Completed, Not Applicable), inspection items, and whether or not the inspection has any attachments.

c. View Details: To perform the inspection on a specific category, click "View Details".

d. Pass Remaining and Submit: Clicking this button will "pass" the remaining categories and submit the completed inspection. 

3. Click View Details on the Category you wish to inspect.

4. Select whether the Category applies to the inspection by clicking the Yes or No bubbles at the top of the category 


5. Select the results and enter comments where necessary. There will be three sections within the category: Inspection Items, Amenities, and Questions. Amenities results will not cause the inspection to fail. Below are some examples of the types of result entries you may encounter when performing an inspection.

i. Pass/Fail Selection - Offers a dropdown with a selection of options.

ii. Yes/No Result - Click the Yes or No bubble to reflect the result.

iii. Text Entry Result - Enter text into field for result information (Note: This type of result will never have the option to fail. Only outcomes are passed and incomplete.)


6. When finished entering results, click the "Done Inspecting" button at the bottom of the page. Users will be returned to the categories list for the inspection. The category should reflect an updated status as to the results of the inspection category that were just entered.

7. When finished inspecting all categories you want to complete, navigate to the bottom of the categories list and click Pass Remaining and Submit. You cannot undo this action. Pass remaining will set the status of Passed to all remaining inspection categories. Otherwise, click into each category and finish it individually. When done, click Complete at the bottom of the Inspection. Note: Some inspection forms do not allow for the Pass Remaining and Submit. 

8. Success! You will be returned to the Inspection Details page, which will be updated with the inspections results and a completed status.

9. If the inspection failed and you wish to create a re-inspection, click the Schedule Re-Inspection button in the Miscellaneous (H) section. Conversely, you may also open a new work order from a failed inspection. Click the Generate Work Order Button and the form will be auto-populated based upon failed inspection items.
